I think by now you have pretty much figured out my love affair with color. I also love armchair travel. I have met both loves in Color: A Natural History of the Palette by Victoria Finlay. This book will have you up later than you intended, following the author around the world as she tracks down the origins of the colors in the traditional painters’ palettes. You will meet interesting characters and visit remote, exotic locales. Finlay is a journalist and this fact shines in her excellent research and engaging writing style. Sometimes the book feels like an adventure story, and sometimes it feels like a mystery. You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate this book. You just have to be as curious as the author, and ready for anything. I assure you that you will never look at colors the same way after you finish this fascinating read.
